September 13, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LA Mom travels with her son Sparrow to the Big Apple to share the comedic drama that happens in-flight is so unbelievably authentic, it could only be absolutely true. Cameo by her son in the United Solo Festival!

Tonya has the uncanny ability to transport herself into the characters that she plays. It's pure magic. (Louis Gossett, Jr.)

Flying Standby" is a great metaphor to build a show around, and Tonya Meeks' autobiographical solo show is at its best when we see the scattered Meeks, suitcase in hand, caught in that "will I or won't I and where?" place. In relating her complicated relationship with her whack job of a mother—by portraying her, in many cases—she gives an appealing, raw performance that's full of love, truth, and humor rather than self-pity. NYC – September 13, 2017 - Following its acclaimed sold out run as an official selection of the 2012 L.A. Fringe Theater Festival and across the US, playwright Tonya Meeks’ autobiographical tour de force “Flying Standby” has been selected in United Solo Festival Off Broadway Premiere.

Time bends during this nonstop flight through the unconditionally complex mother-and-child relationship. As the daughter becomes the mother, she must navigate away from the home she's never really left, towards one that might not even exist. Cameo Appearance: Her son Sparrow Meeks. Recommended for: all audiences.

Meeks’ one-woman portrayal of her family cast album is a performance Backstage hailed as “appealing, raw” and “full of love, truth and humor.”  Her seamless transformations between a mother in whom child protective services would certainly be interested, and the child struggling to navigate her own sense of conflicted identity, offer in themselves a master class of acting.  In “Flying Standby,” Meeks blows open her secret diary, sharing with her audience a lifelong passport stamped with suppressed embarrassment, shame, guilt and disappointment.  The comedic drama that happens in-flight is so unbelievably authentic, it could only be absolutely true.

“Flying Standby” offers a first class ticket to the dissection, betrayal, rejection and ultimate reconciliation of unconditional love.  It is a trip not to be missed.
